Address book sync Google contacts in MacOSX 10.5.3

29 05 2008

Are you one of those people who find that no matter how hard you try to keep your contact info organized, it always winds up scattered all over? Your dad’s IM handle is on your Mac, while that business lead’s fax number is on your iPhone, and lots of email addresses are in your Gmail address book — except your eye doctor’s, which is the one you really need right now…

We’re happy to tell you that starting today, it’s easier to sync up your contact lists. The Address Book application in Mac OS X 10.5.3 now lets iPhone users sync their Address Book with Google Contacts. To try it, go to the Address Book menu, choose Preferences, and then check Synchronize with Google. It’ll ask for your Google account and password, then automatically update your contacts every time you sync your iPhone.

Before you try syncing, it’s a good idea to back up both your Address Book contacts and Gmail contacts.

How To Get A Job In Venture Capital

8 05 2008

Interesting article from “FELD THOUGHTS”:

I just posted the great VC blog of the day over on Ask the VC but I think that it is so useful I’m reposting about it here.

One of my favorite VC posts of all times was my partner Seth Levine’s post titled How to become a venture capitalist. I regularly get emails from folks looking for a job in the VC industry and I almost always point them at this post.

Seth has followed up with a new post titled How to get a job in venture capital (revisited).  It’s updated with some additional information for those that respond to the first post by saying “I get it that it’s hard, but what should I do over the next five years to position myself for a VC job.”

While the bullet points (go to business school, work for a start-up, start a company of your own, work for a bank or consulting firm, and put yourself out there) may seem obvious, Seth’s commentary is really helpful.

I strongly encourage anyone interested in pursuing a VC career to read both of these posts.

Authorize Itunes, missing folder

12 04 2008

If with Itunes happens one of the following:

  • You are unable to complete a purchase from the iTunes Store.
  • You cannot play music you purchased from the iTunes Store.
  • An alert appears with the following text:

There was an error storing your authorization information on this computer. The required directory was not found or has a permission error.

A missing Shared folder may prevent purchases from the iTunes Store or may prevent playback of purchased music. The following steps will recreate a missing Share folder using either the Finder or the Terminal.

Use the Finder

  1. Log in using an administrator account.
  2. From the Go menu, choose Go to Folder.
  3. Type: “/Users” and click Go.
  4. If there is not a Shared folder in the Users folder, from the File menu, choose New Folder.
  5. Name the folder “Shared”.
  6. Select the new folder and from the File menu, choose Get Info.
  7. Click the disclosure triangle to open the Ownership and Permissions section of the Info window.
  8. Set the permissions as follows (you may be prompted to enter an administrator account password):
    • Owner: access Read & Write
    • Group: access Read & Write
    • Others: access Read & Write
  9. Close the Get Info window.

Advanced: Use Terminal

  1. Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities).Warning: This step involves modifying permission settings by entering commands in the Terminal application. Users unfamiliar with Terminal and UNIX-like environments should proceed with caution. The entry of incorrect commands may result in data loss or unusable system software. Improper alteration of permissions can result in reduced system security or exposure of private data.
  2. Type: sudo mkdir -p /Users/Shared
  3. Press Return.
  4. Enter your administrator account password when prompted, then press Return.
  5. Type sudo chmod 777 /Users/Shared
  6. Press Return.
  7. Quit Terminal.
It works for me to read and move to my Ipod my purchased music.
